Carbon Monoxide Prevention

Carbon monoxide poisoning prevention, follow these guidelines in your home and workplace:

  • Make sure boilers, cookers, heating systems, and appliances are installed, maintained and regularly serviced by a reputable, registered engineer, for example, GAS SAFE for gas appliances, HETAS (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) for solid fuel appliances, or OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association) for oil appliances. Do not attempt to install, or service, appliances yourself.
  • Make sure that all chimneys and flues are swept from top to bottom regularly and kept clear at least once a year by a qualified sweep - for example, by a member of NACS, GMS or APICS.
  • Make sure that rooms are ventilated and do not block air vents. If your home is double-glazed or draught-proofed, make sure there is still enough air circulating for any heaters in the room.
  • Never use ovens or gas ranges to heat your home.
  • Do not use petrol/diesel equipment inside your home if you can avoid it. Only use them in a well-ventilated area and put the engine unit and exhaust outside.
  • Do not burn charcoal in an enclosed space, such as on an indoor barbeque.

Alert yourself by getting a carbon monoxide alarm fitted!
